Not only was the city hosting the Super Bowl this year, but Mardi Gras celebrations were also exceptionally long, scheduled to continue until March. However, the terrorist attack on New Year’s Day rocked the city, leaving businesses fearful of the impact it would have on tourism and the economy.
Big Change in New Orleans: New Preparations for Arts, Culture and Tourism
Stephen Bisaha of Gulf States Newsroom roamed the French Quarter to talk to local businesses and community members to understand how they are preparing for the upcoming busy tourist season and the long celebration of Mardi Gras. From hosting the Super Bowl to festive celebrations, the city is in high spirits.
Meanwhile, the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) has strengthened its team. The prestigious art institution has a new chief curator—Anne Collins Smith. She is the former director of the Louisiana Art Gallery at Xavier University and is now set to take modern and contemporary art to new heights at NOMA. New Orleans’ prestigious Musaika Chamber Ensemble is set to enchant the city tonight with the tunes of its 19th season of Hidden Treasures’. This evening of music will explore the “French Connection,” resonating through the masterpieces of renowned composers Ravel, Saint-Saëns, and other great composers. To guarantee a memorable musical experience, violinist and ensemble president Bruce Owen will share the inspiration and depths of the musical journey behind this special performance.
