I Dream of Jeannie premiered on September 18, 1965. It was the brainchild of renowned author Sidney Sheldon, who later became one of the most popular novelists of the 70s and 80s. Inspired by the success of Bewitched, Sheldon decided to create a show that paired a magical woman with an ordinary human. But unlike Darrin from Bewitched, Major Tony Nelson from I Dream of Jeannie was a respected NASA astronaut.
However, I Dream of Jeannie was never a big hit in the television ratings. The show never made it to the Nielsen Top 20 and only reached the Top 30 in its first and fourth seasons. But the real reason the show was canceled was the network’s decision that Jeannie and Major Nelson should get married.
Show creator Sidney Sheldon wrote in his 2006 memoir that the wedding “didn’t take all the fun out of the show because it took away all the magic from Jeannie and Tony’s relationship.” Barbara Eden told Remind Magazine in 2024, “I didn’t agree with the decision, but I had no choice. I just said, ‘She’s not a human being; she’s a magical being, and you can’t have a human marry a magical being. It won’t work.'”
Despite this, the wedding went ahead, and the change happened in the middle of the final season. The decision sapped the show of its originality and magic, and I Dream of Jeannie was eventually canceled.

The final episode of I Dream of Jeannie, My Master, the Chili King, which aired on May 26, 1970, did not give fans a big climax or an emotional sendoff. Instead, it turned out to be a fun but simple episode, with the entry of Tony Nelson’s conman cousin Arvel. Arvel tries to convince Tony to start a canned chili business and brings Jeannie into the fold.
Magic Chili and Growing Trouble
Since Jeannie is a genie, she uses her magic to randomly make Tony’s Texas Chili appear in grocery stores. But when customers go to buy it, the stores have no record of it, causing chaos. When NASA officials notice this strange mess, they are extremely annoyed. In the end, Jeannie has to use her magical powers to clean up the whole mess, and all traces of the pepper disappear.
I Dream of Jeannie Continues
Although the show ended without a great finale, the story was later continued in two TV movies released in 1985 and 1991. However, these movies did not feature Tony Nelson (Larry Hagman). These movies showed Jeannie struggling with her new life and the challenge of maintaining the balance between genie and human.
